What is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition that affects how your brain processes sensory information. Sensory information includes anything that you can see, hear, smell, taste, or touch. It can affect one or all the senses. SPD usually means you’re overly sensitive to stimuli that other people are not. But the disorder can cause the opposite effect, too. In these cases, it takes more stimuli to impact you.
As parents, can we spot the signs of SPD in our children? This workshop will cover the types of behaviours to look out for to help identify it in our own children. This course will also provide some practical tips to help your child manage this disorder in day-to-day life.
Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition that is confirmed by an Occupational Therapist and for the purpose of this workshop, we are pleased to invite Alison Hart, an OT from the organisation Children’s Choice Therapy Ltd to deliver the session.
- This workshop will look at Sensory Processing Disorders through the recognition of vision impairment. The workshop will consider the neurology of what Sensory Processing Disorders are and how they, therefore, create the difficulties and barriers to function that we see. The workshop will begin to address strategies for support in a practical and realistic way.
The session will also include a short presentation by Charlotte Mellor from VICTA’s Parent Services about her daughter Scarlett and her sensory processing issues and how as a parent she manages them at home and out in the community.
