We are very pleased to be co-delivering this session with Jay Self BM FRCOphth PhD- aka Dr Jay. This session is for parent/carers of children who have a vision impairment, with particular emphasis placed on early diagnosis support, nystagmus, process guidance and jargon busting.
Dr Jay is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Associate Professor of Paediatric Ophthalmology in Southampton. He sees all types of paediatric eye conditions, from common to rare diseases. He runs super-specialist services for, rare genetic eye conditions, albinism, nystagmus and paediatric cataract. He leads a paediatric eye disease research group and has published widely on squint, paediatric cataract, albinism, nystagmus and retinal disease with a particular focus on translating research into meaningful benefits for patients. He is member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Paediatric, Academic and Genomics committees, works as advisor for 5 charities and is national chair of the NIHR paediatric and neuro-ophthalmology clinical study groups.
Here are some examples of concerns that you may have and could help you to decide if this session is right for you and your family:
- Are you a parent/carer who is feeling uneasy after a vision impairment diagnosis and want some more information on what’s next?
- Do you feel you leave the hospital after meeting with professionals with more answers than when you arrived?
- Are you struggling to get some face to face with your designated ophthalmologist?
- What is the cause of your child’s condition?
- How does the condition affect my child’s ability to see?
- Does this condition sometimes run in families?
- Can anything be done to cure or help this condition? Is any special treatment necessary? What might help? What can I do to help?
- Is there anything my child mustn’t do (for example, rub their eyes, shake their head, or jump on to a hard surface)?
This is a Q&A session, where we are asking families to pre-submit questions for Dr Jay. This time of uncertainty can be a difficult for parents and carers, so we wanted to create a session that could help to put your mind at rest.
The first part of the workshop will be dedicated to pre-submitted questions that can be added at point of application, the remainder of the session will be opened up to discussion where you can ask for further information.
